OUR
Mission
Our mission is to provide exceptional tour experiences to promote historical consciousness of local African American history, restore the value of the voices of the underserved in the development of our region, and ensure effective change.
HISTORICAL
IMPORTANCE
Wilmington, North Carolina and the surrounding Cape Fear region has a deep and varied African American history. Preserving this history is vital to an ability to understand the conditions of historically marginalized populations, not only in our local region but also on a national level. From its roots in colonization, slavery, and civil war, to the 1898 coup de'etat and subsequent massacre, through segregation and desegregation, to the remarkable African American individuals who rose above through resiliency and determination, Wilmington is full of historical events, locations, and people that represent critical lessons for us all.
Journeys Wilmington, in alignment with the Burnett-Eaton Museum Foundation, seeks to preserve and spread awareness of a history at risk of being lost or misrepresented and of the historic and ongoing disenfranchisement of people from all populations.
NKYINKYIM
SYMBOL
Adinkra are symbols originating from the Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire regions of Africa and were printed on cloth worn by royals attending important ceremonies. They contain deep, rich historical and philosophical significance.
Nkyinkyim
The symbol appearing on our logo is Nkyinkyim, representing the "tortuous nature of life's journey, which require one to be versatile and resilient to survive." - adinkrasymbols.org
For the Akans, this symbol serves as a reminder to always be determined and prepared to handle anything that life has to offer in order to succeed. Succeeding in life requires resilience and versatility, which are qualities represented by Nkyinkyim.
